five minute friday

let’s simplify it.

Happy FMF! This week’s word:

this time of the year, we get a lot of messages bombarded at us. Fresh starts, remake yourself, the new year is a blank page, all of that mess– now let’s make some goals and resolutions to do the changing (though we all know those resolutions tend to go out the window when real life hits).

We hear the message over and over again: change. reinvent yourself. start over.  new year, new you.

While I think this is sometimes a good thing to do for ourselves, I was reminded today, ever so gently, of this thought: it’s not me doing the changing. It’s not me reinventing myself.

God is the one who makes me new. God is the one who will make a change in me. I’m just the vessel He’s making the changes in.

I was struck by this quote today by Thomas Merton:

keep still, and let Him do some work.

Let Him do the work.
Let Him work his will in our lives. (James 4:7)
Let Him fight for us. (Exodus 14:14)
Let Him make all things new. (Revelation 21:5)
Let Him lead our steps, guide our days, and bring us peace when the path ahead is uncertain.
it’s not simple, but it’s worth it.
I felt like this song was pretty fitting. 🙂 (don’t know why the video part won’t load, so I just made it a link!)
