Learn {Five Minute Friday}

This week’s Five Minute Friday prompt is:

(kinda perfect for me right now)

learn.

Learning is on my mind 24/7 currently.

7 days into student teaching and I’m ready to call it quits, in a lot of ways.

I’ve had a migraine that just won’t go away since Monday. Stress all week about things out of my control, things I’m overthinking, things I shouldn’t be worried about.

Worried about how I’m going to teach freshmen anything about Romeo and Juliet when I can barely put one foot in front of the other right now.

I’m learning a lot. I’m learning about the ins and outs of being a true blue teacher– every detail (the good, bad, and ugly). I’m learning about freshman and how hilarious they are (and how they never stop talking). I’m learning the responsibilities of having my own class (in someone else’s class, which is just plain awkward).

But right now? I’m learning the most about me.

How I am under intense pressure left and right (hint: it’s not good).

How bad my mental health is currently (bad).

How much I want to give up on myself and this dream I’ve had since childhood. I thought I had it all figured out. I don’t.

Mostly? I’m learning about how much I have left to learn. About teaching… but mostly about myself.

  1. Jordan,
oh my sister! I’m so excited for you to be student teaching English! 🙂 I’m about to take on 7th and 8th grade math. (only I didn’t student teach this subject and have been out of college for 11 years) I’ll be fresh in the pool, just like you. I hope you continue to write about your journey. I’m sure we’ll have things we can share as we learn together! Our schools begin later, so I accepted the job today and have three weeks to write lesson plans and prepare. (I have to write tests?! Yikes!)
Hang in there, the pressure is greatest from yourself. You’re made for this moment. You’re Esther!

    1. I’m so glad there are people out there that can teach math. I LOVE middle schoolers though, lucky you!
That’s the rough thing about student teaching. I was lucky and had 2 weeks before I started (I’m at my alma mater, so I met w/ my teacher beforehand). But I was also still working and studying for my praxis exams, so I wasn’t as prepared as I should have been. I am still pretty unsure if I can do this thing!
Thanks so much for the kind words. I hope teaching goes splendidly for you– I hope we both learn through this mess together! 🙂

  2. Oh, friend, I am so sorry. That is so rough to have to teach all week through a migraine. Painful, hard, and overwhelming. I will be praying for you tonight. I will be praying that the migraine will pass, and I will be praying for grace, strength, and perseverance for you. Keep on keeping on. Keep learning and growing and teaching. Cling to the Lord and to His Word. Hugs to you tonight.

  3. Oh the joys of Romeo and Juliet. LOL A 13 year old, a 16 year old, a 3 day marriage, and 6 (I think) deaths. Yep. 😀 Have fun with the freshman, and I hope your migraine goes away soon. I have been so very thankful for Excedrin Migraine.

    Hugs,
    Melinda

    1. oh goodness don’t get me started! My least favorite Shakespeare play. I’m not much of a Shakespeare person at all if I’m honest. Haha! The worst thing is that I myself struggle so much with Shakespeare and understanding what it’s saying–how on earth am I supposed to make them understand it?!?!
Thanks for the kind words! Taking excedrin ’round the clock, still no luck.
